Unforgettable interaction with Senior Inspector Wafula Charles

It’s always interesting to have an interaction with employees that have served the company for the longest time. And so, having a running E-Ticketing project with Link buses, I looked out for the longest-serving employees and zeroed on to this energetic man, Senior Inspector Wafula Charles!

My first interaction with Mr. Wafula was when I was on my first trip to Masindi and he came on the bus to inspect the conductor I had traveled with. I had a brief yet interesting conversation with him, it’s from that day that I knew we would need another time for an interview because he talked passionately about LINK Bus Company, his work, and performed it with a passion. So, on 29th October 2020, I took on my next mission to have more time with him and got on the bus with him from Kampala to Masindi and back.

Interestingly, I didn’t have to ask him any questions, he found himself telling me most of what I needed to hear, he served as a conductor for five years at the then Peoples Bus (during those years of Uganda Transport Company, UTC) and later to Gateway Buses until 2007 when he joined Link Bus Services. He has gone through all the training and grown from ladder to ladder until he was appreciated and made Senior Inspector / Instructor, he proudly wears his uniform with the star on the shoulder… (each star is another rank added within Link Bus).

He rejoices in the fact that most inspectors have gone through his hands and that he has trained them well. He also prides in the fact that Link values customers and have by all means ensured good customer care, he says this is one of the strong points that have led to company growth that came from the continued support from the customers.

Mr. Wafula is very passionate; however, he sometimes feels like sickness has come to him at the wrong time. He is diabetic and has to move with his medicine all the time, eat specific foods, and at any time as his health demands. Despite all this, he has still served to expectation. He is very happy that Link has chosen to partner with KaCyber Technologies, a Ugandan ICT company that provides digital solutions to transport operators for buses, trains, and ferries. KaCyber offers electronic ticketing and payment services to transport operators and enables their Customers/passengers to book travel tickets online. Mr. Wafula strongly believes that the move taken by LINK Bus to go digital will indeed put their company to another standard. He appreciates Link Bus management for the great opportunity he has had as their employee, he also still has high hopes that Link is headed for much better.
